Renault Turbo-petrol Review: The Most Powerful SUV in its Class!

Turbo gasoline engines are considered to be one of the deadliest ammunition that modern vehicle culture is equipped with. The compact SUV segment in India is currently facing a ruthless onslaught from Koreans, namely Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. While they have a wide variety of firearms to choose from to put down their rivals, the Renault Duster pulled out the great father of all guns, the most powerful engine in its class!

The drive train

In its BS6 form, the Renault Duster was only available with a 1.5 liter NA petrol engine after the automaker decided to discontinue diesel engines for its portfolio in India. However, a brand new 1.3-liter turbo gasoline engine was unveiled at Auto Expo to replace the punchy diesel, and now that same engine has made its way to the Duster.

We have done a detailed review of the Duster before, and now that we know that the turbo gasoline Duster has no significant changes other than the engine, we will just focus on that.

The new engine now makes the Duster the most powerful gasoline-powered SUV in its segment. The 1.3-liter turbo gasoline engine is a BSVI-compliant engine that offers power and torque of 156 hp at 5500 rpm and 254 Nm at 1600 rpm. The modern engine is equipped with technologies such as gasoline direct injection (GDI) which offers high power and efficiency, Dual Variable Valve Timing (VVT) for higher torque at lower revs and reduced emissions. The performance figures are also impressive. The Turbo Duster drives the 0-100 in 10.5 seconds, making it one second faster than its competitors.

The maximum torque is already generated at 1600 rpm and pulls strongly from there. No matter where you are in the rev range, you never feel like the Duster is having trouble moving forward. The 7-speed CVT is lag-free and quick and responsive, which is also very impressive. Because CVT transmissions aren't known for their responsiveness and enthusiasm. We were a little skeptical when we first learned that Renault had chosen a CVT rather than a DCT for such a peppy engine, but the CVT works pretty well with the engine. The engine is also devoid of rudeness. So that you know, the engine was developed by Daimler and used in some Mercs. The ARAI certified mileage is 16 km / h, but the mileage is expected to be in the 10 to 15 km / h range.

Ride and handling

This is another department where the Duster just steals the show. It has always been known for its driving dynamics and has thankfully been preserved over the years. Its competitors are high on their equipment list, but when it comes to general driving fun, the Duster blows it out of the park. The steering is very communicative and you know exactly what is happening on the road. We'll even say that the Duster's steering wheel is one of the best units we've seen, in other segments too! Then comes its exceptional ride quality. With a ground clearance of 205 mm and a sleek suspension, the Duster is remarkable and glides over uneven surfaces.

Because of the abundance of power and torque, you can also feel a torque control that becomes even more noticeable when you start pushing it around the turns. This turbo gasoline engine is on the same footing and this could be the main reason for it. We love the way Duster handles it, but if Renault updates its basics, we think it will be able to make more adequate use of its shovel load.

Inside and outside

In terms of visual differentiation, the turbo gasoline engine Duster has purple accents on the radiator grille and on the tailgate, the roof rails and the fog light cover. The three-wing chrome grille and the projector headlights with LED daytime running lights are retained, while the R17 wheels have a Forza diamond pattern. With this new engine, the Duster still offers a ground clearance of 205 mm and high approach and take-off angles.

The cabin is upholstered in night black upholstery, while the seats have high-quality blue accents. The infotainment system is a 17.64 cm touchscreen MediaNAV Evolution equipped with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, voice recognition and EcoGuide - a system that ...
